How to Clean Tarnished Sterling Silver with Baking Soda and Aluminum Foil
Sterling silver is made to be worn—not hidden away because it has gone dark.
Over time, silver can develop a grey, yellow, brown, or black layer called tarnish. This does not mean your jewellery is damaged or poor quality. Silver naturally reacts with sulfur-containing compounds in the air, forming a thin layer of silver sulfide on its surface. Humidity, body oils, cosmetics and environmental exposure can speed up the process.
For suitable sterling silver pieces, tarnish can often be removed at home using aluminum foil, baking soda and freshly boiled water. Unlike abrasive polishing, this method uses an electrochemical reaction to help convert the tarnished surface back toward metallic silver.
Before You Begin: Is This Method Safe for Your Jewellery?
This method is best reserved for solid sterling silver jewellery without delicate stones, glued components or intentional blackened details.
Do not use this method on:
- Gold-plated, silver-plated or rhodium-plated jewellery
- Oxidized or intentionally blackened silver
- Pearls, coral, amber, opal or mother-of-pearl
- Turquoise, malachite, lapis lazuli or other porous stones
- Jewellery containing glued-in stones or components
- Enamel, resin, wood, leather or fabric
- Antique or delicate pieces
- Jewellery with hollow or sealed sections
- Any piece when you are uncertain about its materials
Hot water and alkaline cleaning solutions can damage certain stones, loosen adhesives or remove intentional oxidation. Composite objects should not be submerged unless every material in the piece can safely tolerate the treatment.
When in doubt, use lukewarm water, mild dish soap and a soft cloth—or contact us before cleaning your Shield Maiden jewellery.
What You Will Need
Gather the following supplies:
- A heat-resistant glass or ceramic bowl
- Aluminum foil
- Baking soda
- Freshly boiled water
- A kettle or heat-safe pouring container
- Silicone-tipped tongs or a wooden spoon
- A soft microfibre or lint-free cloth
- Mild dish soap
- A small soft-bristled brush, optional
- Heat-resistant gloves, recommended
Do not use a metal bowl. A glass or ceramic bowl allows the silver and aluminum foil to create the contact needed for the reaction without another metal interfering.

Step 1: Check and Wash the Jewellery
Examine the piece carefully before you begin.
Confirm that it is solid sterling silver and does not contain any materials that should not be submerged. Check for loose stones, damaged clasps, open jump rings or weakened connections.
Wash the jewellery gently in lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap. This removes body oils, creams and surface dirt that may prevent the cleaning solution from reaching the tarnish evenly. Rinse well.
Step 2: Line the Bowl with Aluminum Foil
Place a sheet of aluminum foil inside the bowl, covering the bottom and at least part of the sides.
Either side of ordinary aluminum foil will work. Press the foil gently into the bowl so the jewellery can sit directly against it.
The silver must make physical contact with the aluminum for the reaction to work effectively.
Step 3: Place the Silver Directly on the Foil
Lay the jewellery inside the bowl so that at least one part of the silver touches the aluminum foil.
For chains, spread them out as much as possible rather than leaving them in a tight knot. Several pieces can be cleaned together, provided they are not overcrowded and each one touches the foil.
Avoid stacking pieces directly on top of one another.
Step 4: Add the Baking Soda
Sprinkle baking soda evenly over the jewellery and foil.
A practical starting amount is approximately:
1 tablespoon of baking soda for every 1 cup or 250 mL of water.
You do not need to scrub the dry baking soda into the jewellery. Its role here is to help create the conductive solution required for the reaction.
Step 5: Carefully Add Freshly Boiled Water
Boil enough water to fully cover the jewellery.
Place the bowl on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Slowly pour the freshly boiled water into the bowl until the jewellery is completely submerged.
The solution may bubble or foam slightly. You may also notice a faint sulfur-like smell as tarnish is removed. Work in a ventilated area and avoid leaning directly over the bowl. University chemistry guidance identifies scalding and chemical exposure as reasons to use gloves, eye protection and good ventilation during this process.
Do not place the jewellery in a pot and boil it on the stove. Pouring freshly boiled water into a stationary heat-resistant bowl gives you much better control and reduces the risk of jewellery moving, tangling or contacting a hot heating element.
Step 6: Allow the Jewellery to Soak
Let the jewellery remain in the solution for approximately two to five minutes.
Light tarnish may begin disappearing almost immediately. Heavier tarnish may require a little longer.
Use silicone-tipped tongs or a wooden spoon to turn the jewellery carefully, ensuring another area of the silver touches the foil. Do not reach into the hot water with your hands.
Check the jewellery after a few minutes rather than leaving it unattended for an extended soak.
Step 7: Remove and Inspect the Silver
Carefully lift the jewellery from the bowl using tongs or a wooden utensil.
Place it on a clean towel and allow it to cool before touching it. Inspect the surface under good lighting.
When tarnish remains, you may repeat the process once using fresh foil, baking soda and hot water. Do not repeatedly treat a piece that is not responding. The remaining dark areas may be intentional oxidation, surface damage, residue or a material that requires professional assessment.
Step 8: Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse the jewellery under clean lukewarm water to remove all traces of baking soda and loosened residue.
Pay particular attention to:
- Chain links
- Clasps
- Hinges
- Decorative openings
- Stone settings
- Small crevices
A very soft brush can be used gently on plain sterling silver when residue becomes trapped between links. Do not scrub stones, plating or deliberately oxidized details.
Step 9: Dry the Jewellery Completely
Pat the jewellery dry with a soft lint-free cloth.
Do not leave it to air-dry while wet, particularly in humid conditions. Moisture trapped inside clasps and chain links can contribute to spotting and future tarnish.
Lay chains flat and straighten them gently while drying. Allow the piece to rest on a clean towel until every opening and connection is completely dry.
Step 10: Finish with a Silver Polishing Cloth
Once the piece is fully dry, buff it lightly with a jewellery polishing cloth.
Use straight, gentle strokes rather than aggressive circular rubbing. The cloth can remove remaining surface dullness and restore a brighter finish.
Black marks appearing on the polishing cloth are normal. Do not wash a treated silver-polishing cloth unless its manufacturer specifically says that it can be washed, as laundering may remove its polishing agents.
Why This Method Works
Silver tarnish is primarily silver sulfide. When tarnished silver touches aluminum in a hot conductive solution, an electrochemical reaction occurs. The aluminum is more reactive than the silver and helps draw sulfur away from the silver surface.
This is different from scrubbing silver with an abrasive paste. Abrasive polishing removes the tarnish partly by removing a microscopic amount of the surface beneath it. The foil method instead uses a chemical reduction process, although it may not produce the same highly polished finish as careful hand polishing.
How Often Should You Clean Sterling Silver This Way?
Use this treatment when plain sterling silver has developed visible tarnish—not as a weekly cleaning ritual.
For ordinary maintenance:
- Wipe jewellery after wearing it.
- Wash occasionally with mild soap and lukewarm water.
- Dry it completely.
- Store it in an airtight bag or tarnish-resistant pouch.
- Keep it away from rubber, damp environments and sulfur-containing materials.
Frequent cleaning should not replace proper storage. Preventing heavy tarnish is gentler than repeatedly removing it.
Important Final Note
Silver naturally changes with time and wear. That evolving surface is part of the character of a precious metal, and light tarnish does not mean your jewellery is ruined.
