Securing Your Permanent Jewelry: A Step-by-Step Guide

Permanent jewelry is a beautiful and symbolic way to wear your jewelry without the need for clasps or daily removal. At Shield Maiden Jewelry, we offer two types of permanent jewelry: permanent locking rings (sterling silver) and our Shield Maiden™ Signature Lock & Key Clasp, a proprietary closure forged for strength, trust, and intention.

This guide will walk you through how to properly put on a permanent locking ring and a Shield Maiden™ Signature Lock & Key Clasp so you can enjoy your jewelry securely and comfortably.

What Is a Lock & Key Clasp?

Our proprietary Shield Maiden™ Signature Lock & Key Clasp features a secure stainless steel locking mechanism fastened with a small hex screw. This clasp offers a sleek, modern look and long-lasting durability while allowing the necklace to be removed when necessary, such as for medical procedures.

Please note: The lock can be a little fiddly because the screw is intentionally very small. This keeps the clasp streamlined and lightweight so it doesn't distract from your jewelry.

How to Put On a Shield Maiden™ Lock & Key Clasp

Follow these steps carefully to secure your necklace with our Signature Lock & Key Clasp.

1. Unlock the Clasp

• The clasp arrives locked, so the first step is to unlock it using the included hex key. You may need to apply a little extra turning pressure to loosen the screw.
• Be very careful not to lose the tiny screw, as it will come away from the stainless steel locking mechanism once loosened.

• Insert the hex key into the small screw and turn counterclockwise until the screw comes free. Carefully lift it out on the end of the key.

• Once the screw is removed, gently pull the two sides of the lock apart to open the necklace.

2. Prepare for Reassembly

• Place the small screw securely on the end of the hex key so it is ready for reassembly.

3. Position the Necklace

• Drape the necklace around the neck, ensuring that it sits comfortably and is not too tight.

4. Reassemble the Clasp

• Bring the two sides of the clasp together, carefully aligning the screw holes. Hold both sides in place.

5. Secure the Screw

• Carefully position the hex key with the screw on the end and guide the screw into the aligned hole.
• Turn clockwise to tighten the screw and secure the clasp. Make sure it is snug, but do not overtighten or force it.
• Gently check that the clasp is securely fastened before wearing.

What Is a Permanent Locking Ring?

A permanent locking ring is designed to secure jewelry without a traditional clasp. Instead, a small ring is closed with pliers to connect the ends of the jewelry, creating a secure closure intended for long-term wear.

Unlike our removable Signature Lock & Key Clasp, a permanent locking ring generally requires tools to open or remove.

How to Put On a Permanent Locking Ring

Follow these steps to securely attach your permanent locking ring.

1. Prepare Your Materials

You will need:

• Your permanent locking ring necklace or bracelet
• A piece of thin string or thread
• A pair of pliers, preferably flat-nose or jewelry pliers

2. Position the Necklace or Bracelet

• Drape the jewelry around the neck, wrist, or ankle, ensuring that the two open looped ends align properly.
• Make sure the jewelry sits comfortably and is not too tight.

3. Secure the Loops with String

• Thread the thin string through both looped ends of the jewelry.
• Gently pull the string to bring the loops together.
• Lightly tie the string to hold the loops in place while you attach the locking ring.

4. Insert and Close the Locking Ring

• Slide the permanent locking ring through both loops at the ends of the jewelry.
• Once positioned, use your pliers to gently close the ring securely.
• Ensure that the ring is completely closed, with no gap that could catch on clothing or allow the jewelry to come undone.

5. Remove the String

• Once the locking ring is securely closed, untie and remove the string.
• Check that the ring is fully closed and the jewelry sits comfortably.
• Your permanent locking jewelry is now ready to wear!

Important: Permanent jewelry should never be worn so tightly that it restricts movement or causes discomfort. If removal is necessary for medical treatment, an emergency, or another reason, the jewelry can be removed using appropriate tools. Never delay necessary medical care to preserve a piece of jewelry.
