A lariat necklace is a long, draping necklace designed to create a vertical drop down the  front of the body. Unlike a traditional necklace that simply circles the neck and closes at the back, many lariats are designed to slide, loop, wrap, or adjust at the front. That gives the wearer much more control over how high the necklace sits and how long the drop becomes.

It is one of the reasons lariats are so versatile. The same necklace can look dramatically different depending on how it is styled. Some designs are completely open-ended. The word lariat originally refers to a rope or loop, which makes sense when you look at the way the necklace works. 

Rather than being fixed into one shape, the chain can often move through a ring or connecting point, creating a long vertical line.

The result is jewelry that feels less static than a conventional necklace.  And in many designs, you decide exactly how you want to wear it.

Lariat Necklace vs Traditional Necklace

A traditional necklace usually has a fixed wearable length, while a lariat gives you more freedom.

Depending on the design, you may be able to:

• wear the neckline higher or lower
• create a short or dramatic front drop
• wrap the necklace more than once
• layer it over or under other chains
• change the overall silhouette without changing jewelry

That adaptability makes lariats particularly good for people who like to style their jewelry differently from day to day.

What Is a Y Necklace?

A Y necklace is named for its shape.

The chain sits around the neck, then meets at the centre before dropping vertically down the chest, creating a Y-shaped silhouette. Some lariats naturally create a Y shape, which is why the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. The biggest difference is usually construction.

A true adjustable lariat often slides or loops through a central element, while many Y necklaces have a fixed centre connection and a traditional clasp at the back. Visually, however, they can create a very similar look.

How Do You Wear a Lariat Necklace?

There really is no single correct way.

A lariat can be worn:

High and close to the neck
Create a shorter neckline with a longer drop for a dramatic Y silhouette.

Long and relaxed Let the necklace sit lower across the collarbone and chest.

Layered
Pair it with shorter chains, a day collar, or several different textures.

Wrapped
Some longer lariats can be wrapped around the neck before creating the front drop.

Over clothing
Chunkier lariats look particularly striking over black tops, turtlenecks, dresses, and simple necklines.

Why Lariats Work So Well for Layering

Most necklace layers create horizontal lines across the neck and chest. A lariat adds something different: a vertical line. That vertical drop breaks up the layers and gives the entire stack more movement.

Are Lariat Necklaces Adjustable?

Many are, but not all.

Others are lariat-inspired Y necklaces that create the same front silhouette while closing securely with a traditional clasp at the back.
