Locking Day Collars: How the Shield Maiden™ Lock & Key Clasp Works

A locking Day Collar takes the symbolism and visual language of a traditional Day Collar and incorporates a closure that requires a deliberate action to open.

At Shield Maiden, many of our locking designs feature the Shield Maiden™ Signature Lock & Key Clasp, a proprietary closure forged for strength, trust, and intention.

Rather than relying on a conventional lobster clasp or spring ring, the Lock & Key Clasp uses a small key to secure and release the necklace.

To anyone else, it can simply look like part of the jewellery. To the person wearing it, it may mean considerably more.

WHAT IS THE SHIELD MAIDEN™ SIGNATURE LOCK & KEY CLASP?

The Shield Maiden™ Signature Lock & Key Clasp is our proprietary locking closure used on selected Day Collars and locking jewellery.

The closure is operated with a small Allen key. Once secured, the clasp cannot simply be opened by pressing a conventional jewellery lever. Removing the piece requires the key and the deliberate act of unlocking it.

That distinction is part of what makes the clasp meaningful.

For some wearers, locking the necklace represents commitment, trust, connection, devotion, or intention. For others, it is simply a beautifully minimal alternative to an ordinary clasp. There is no meaning you are required to give it.

WHY CHOOSE A LOCKING DAY COLLAR?

A locking closure changes something very small about a piece of jewellery, but that change can make the experience of wearing it feel very different. There is intention in putting it on, there is intention in removing it.

That can make a locking Day Collar especially meaningful as:

WHAT IS THE LOCK & KEY KEEPER?

Because a locking Day Collar requires its key for removal, we also created the Shield Maiden Lock & Key Keeper.

The Keeper is designed to hold the small Allen key used with the Shield Maiden™ Signature Lock & Key Clasp, giving the key a dedicated place rather than letting one more microscopic piece of metal disappear into the mysterious void where all tiny important objects apparently go. 

It can be kept somewhere convenient or incorporated into your jewellery and personal ritual, depending on how you choose to use it.

DOES A LOCKING DAY COLLAR MEAN IT IS PERMANENT?

Not necessarily.

A locking Day Collar is designed to require a key or tool for removal, but that does not mean it can never be removed.mThe Shield Maiden™ Signature Lock & Key Clasp can be unlocked using its corresponding Allen key.

Some Shield Maiden designs also offer a choice between traditional, adjustable, precision-fit, and locking closures. Always check the individual product description so you know exactly which closure option you are selecting.

HOW SHOULD A LOCKING DAY COLLAR FIT?

Fit matters with any necklace, but it becomes especially important with a piece designed to sit close to the neck.

A Day Collar should sit where you want it without feeling uncomfortably tight or restrictive.

When measuring:

• keep the measuring tape comfortably against your skin
• do not pull it tightly around your neck
• consider exactly where you want the collar to sit
• check whether the design is adjustable or precision-fit
• remember that metal does not stretch

Our finished necklaces are measured with the shape and bend of the jewellery taken into account, but we still need an accurate neck measurement from you.

WHAT IS AN O-RING DAY COLLAR?

The O-ring is one of the most recognizable elements in many Day Collar designs.

Its simple circular shape works beautifully as jewellery while also carrying whatever symbolism the wearer chooses to give it. An O-ring may sit at the centre of the necklace, connect chains, support a pendant, or form part of the overall locking design.

Some Shield Maiden O-ring Day Collars are intentionally bold. Others are extremely subtle and read simply as modern minimalist jewellery.

WHAT MATERIALS ARE LOCKING DAY COLLARS MADE FROM?

Shield Maiden locking Day Collars are available in a growing range of metals and finishes.

These include:

• stainless steel
• blackened steel
• gold-finished steel
• sterling silver
• rhodium-plated sterling silver
• gold vermeil over sterling silver
• selected fine gold designs

Stainless steel offers durability and works particularly well for frequently worn locking jewellery.

Sterling silver gives the Day Collar a more traditional fine jewellery feel, with the weight, polish, and character of precious metal. Note that at this time we only offer the Lock & Key in stainless steel. A sterling silver version is coming soon.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH THE KEY?

Keep it somewhere accessible.

The Shield Maiden Lock & Key Keeper was designed specifically to give your clasp key a home.

If someone else holds the key as part of the meaning of your Day Collar, we still recommend knowing where it is and making sure it can be accessed when needed. A locking necklace should add meaning and intention, not create a situation in which jewellery cannot be removed when necessary. If you do loose the key, just send us a raven and we can help. 

CAN A LOCKING DAY COLLAR BE WORN EVERY DAY?

Many are designed specifically for regular wear.

Your best option depends on:

• the material
• the fit
• the weight of the necklace
• the closure
• your lifestyle
• how frequently you intend to remove it

Frequently worn jewellery should also be inspected periodically for loose hardware, worn links, damage, or changes to the clasp.

Steel offers durability and a harder, more industrial character.

Sterling silver brings the concept into fine jewellery.

Gold finishes offer warmth and contrast, while solid gold takes the idea into heirloom territory.
