Norse Moon & Sun Necklace | Sterling Silver Celestial Layered Set with Opal

In Norse mythology, the sun and moon were not simply lights in the sky. They were Sól and Máni — sister and brother, forever travelling across the heavens. I built this three-necklace set around their story.

The shortest layer is a substantial 4 mm sterling silver Bismarck chain, finished with a small sterling star charm. Beneath it sits a delicate sterling silver star bar, like a scattering of stars across the night sky. The final layer carries the heart of the design: a detailed moon and sun pendant, set with a tiny opal that flashes blue as it catches the light.

Together, the three necklaces create a celestial landscape in silver; stars above, Máni and Sól below.

The Story of Máni & Sól

In the old Norse stories, Sól is the goddess who guides the sun across the sky, while her brother Máni guides the moon. Both are pursued relentlessly across the heavens by wolves, creating an eternal chase of light and darkness, day and night. At Ragnarök, the wolves are destined to finally catch them, but their story does not end there. Sól leaves behind a daughter who will travel the same path and bring light once again to the new world.
It is a story of cycles, pursuit, darkness, light and renewal, with the sun disappearing only to return, and the moon forever changing but never truly gone.

The tiny opal at the centre catches flashes of blue and colour depending on the light, giving the moon and sun pendant a little celestial glow of its own.
